Mark Gabbertas

Mark Gabbertas came to the world of furniture design late and in a circuitous way…. foregoing any formal design training.

London, UK
Instead, he learnt his trade as an apprentice cabinet maker with various workshops before establishing his own designer-maker practice at the famous Oblique Studios in Dalston in the 1990’s.
The first chair he ever designed, for an award-winning design for a Soho restaurant in 1995, was put into production by Allermuir, which was the start of a collaboration spanning 30 years, and the first step towards an emphasis purely on furniture design. In 2000 he established the Gabbertas Studio and opened a further studio in Milan in 2020. The Studio works with a series of brands internationally and has conceivably developed a focus on the hospitality, corporate and outdoor furniture sectors.

The Studio has a reputation for designing innovative and commercially relevant work and is at ease with the idea of designing products that have application in the real world.

It also recognises the potential of considered furniture design to affect and influence how people behave, interact and most importantly, feel.

This concept is universally recognised now, but when first incorporated into the Studio’s thinking, it was a pioneering vision for the role of furniture design in everyday life.
